My favorite line in Handel's "Messiah"
My wife’s maiden name is Valle (Spanish for “valley”). I tease her that her favorite line in Handel’s Messiah is “Every valley shall be exalted” because she thinks it’s about her family. (She doesn’t find this humorous.) But if you asked me what my favorite line is in The Messiah, I would have to say that it is the last nine words of the third piece – (Read more)
“For the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.”
I’m not sure why these words strike me so powerfully, but I get goose bumps every time I hear them.
How do we know that God will keep all his promises? How do we know that Messiah will accomplish everything he came to do? How do we know (as we hear in the opening lines of The Messiah) that our iniquity has been pardoned, that the valleys will be lifted up , that the rough places will be smoothed down, that the glory of the Lord will be revealed so that all humankind will see it? In other words, how do we know that Jesus will someday right everything that is wrong with this world? We know this because the mouth of the Lord has declared it. God’s word is powerful! What he says happens. In the beginning of time, he spoke and the universe came into existence. If he has declared that he will accomplish all these things through Christ, we can rest assured he will do what he says!
